Nestled in the rolling countryside of the Uttlesford district in northwest Essex lies Broxted. Tracing its roots back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as Brocchesheuot, roughly translating to "badger's head" this tranquil parish offers a slice of rural English heritage.

At the heart of the community stands St Mary’s Church, a Grade II listed building with origins dating back to the 13th century. Built with a distinctive mix of flint, pebbles, and recycled Roman tiles in its chancel walls, the churchyard rests on a ridge that overlooks the surrounding valleys.

While ancient, the church holds a powerful connection to modern history. Inside, visitors can view the famous Hostage Windows. Installed in the 1990s, the stained glass art commemorates the captivity and eventual release of British journalist John McCarthy, who was held hostage in Beirut for over five years. Broxted was his home parish, and St Mary’s served as a place of vigil during his imprisonment. The two windows one starkly monochromatic depicting captivity, the other vibrant and full of color representing freedom, stand as a moving symbol of hope and peace.

While planes from nearby Stansted Airport occasionally glide through the skies above, Broxted retains its identity as an idyllic, historic corner of northwest Essex.
